The AD6L Submerged: Multi-Axis Production EDM Hole Drilling

The AD6L Submerged CNC handles our most demanding production work. Specifically, it features XY travels of 23.6 by 15.7 inches. Furthermore, the W-axis electrode travel runs 19.7 inches and the Z-axis guide travel runs 13.8 inches. The table-to-guide distance adjusts from 1.2 to 15 inches.

Three features set the AD6L apart from other production machines. First, submerged operation reduces thermal drift and improves dielectric flushing. Second, it supports a 10 or 20-position automatic electrode changer plus a 5 to 20-position guide changer. Third, optional 5th and 6th axis rotary or tilt-turn tables enable compound-angle hole geometries that other machines cannot reach.

The electrode diameter range of 0.008 to 0.124 inches covers the finest medical work alongside larger aerospace cooling holes. For example, a complex turbine blade with compound-angle cooling holes can be drilled in a single setup on the AD6L. Likewise, intricate medical implants with multi-axis hole patterns become production-feasible rather than requiring custom fixturing. As a result, the AD6L tackles parts that would otherwise require multiple setups on simpler machines.

Comparing SD-750 vs AD6L for Production Work

Choosing between the two comes down to three practical factors. First, work envelope — the SD-750 brings a larger XY footprint. Second, part complexity — the AD6L’s optional 5th and 6th axis tables enable compound-angle work the SD-750 cannot match. Third, dielectric environment — submerged operation on the AD6L offers thermal and flushing advantages on demanding jobs.
