What Is Sinker EDM And When Does It Outperform Other Processes?

Sinker EDM (also called Ram EDM or Die-Sinking EDM) uses a shaped graphite or copper electrode to erode material through electrical discharge. Unlike wire EDM which cuts through-profiles  sinker EDM creates blind cavities, complex 3D geometries, and features that no other process can reach in hardened material.

How Sinker EDM Works

Sinker EDM works by lowering a pre-shaped electrode typically machined from graphite or copper toward the workpiece. Neither the electrode nor the workpiece touch. Instead, a controlled electrical discharge (spark) jumps the gap between them in a dielectric fluid bath, eroding material from the workpiece surface with each pulse.

The electrode gradually sinks into the workpiece replicating its shape as a mirror cavity in the material. The dielectric fluid flushes away eroded particles and controls the spark gap throughout the process.

Because there is no physical contact between tool and workpiece, sinker EDM produces zero cutting forces. That means no deflection, no stress, and no heat distortion even on the hardest tool steels and exotic alloys.

Sinker EDM vs. Wire EDM : Which Process Do You Need?

Both processes use electrical discharge to erode conductive material but they solve different problems. Choosing the wrong one for your application costs time and money.

Choose Sinker EDM when:

  • You need blind cavities or pockets that don't exit the workpiece
  • Your part requires a complex 3D cavity shape such as mold cores or die impressions
  • Surface finish is critical mirror finishes are achievable
  • You're working in hardened material where heat distortion is a risk

Choose Wire EDM when:

  • You need a through-cut that exits the workpiece completely
  • Your geometry is a 2D contour, punch profile, or intricate through-shape
  • You need to cut thin or delicate parts where electrode pressure would cause deflection
  • You're producing tight-tolerance blanks, templates, or extrusion dies
